How we choose the best Smart Alarms
In order to find the best alarms on the markets, our reviewing team has to try out the main systems on the market.
We keep the conditions the same for each test to ensure that it is fair.
Using highly-specific criteria, we carefully analyse each product and conclude which ones are the best for different situations.
Why Smart Alarms?
Having access to your home’s security system at all times is extremely important.
By having a Smart Alarm, you can rest assure that your property is safe (or not) at all times of the day & night.
If a problem does arise, you’ll know about it as soon as it happens, so that you can start working on a solution. It’s simple – the quicker a crime is noticed, the more likely it is to be solved.
What makes a good Smart Alarm?
There are several factors to consider when looking for a good Smart Alarm.
- Volume – how loud is the alarm?
- Connection – does it link directly to the emergency services?
- Control – can you control it by a mobile app & is it easy to use?
- Reliability – does the alarm stay on 24/7?
By assessing these factors, we can deduce whether you can trust a Smart Alarm to keep your home safe.
Now, you probably want to know what the best Smart Alarms on the market are? Find our professionally curated list of the best alarms below.
1. Ring Alarm
- Works with Alexa
The Ring Smart Alarm is truly an amazing piece of kit. Integrated with Alexa, this system is perfect for any home, providing you with a peace of mind that your home is protected from all the bad people in the world.
It’s easy to set up and is integrated with Alexa, a popular smart home speaker system – this allows you to arm & disarm the system using your voice.
Ring’s main home smart alarm package comprises of the 5 following components.
- Base Station
- Contact Sensor
- Motion Detector
- Range Extender
2. Yale Sync
Best for: Families
- Email & text alerts
- High range (200 meters)
- App could be easier to use
The Yale Smart Alarm System is perfect for families.
Our favourite feature of this system is the Geo-Location which reminds you to set your alarm when you leave the house.
This alarm also works with Alexa, similarly to the Ring alarm mentioned above. This means that you can control the alarm with your voice.
There’s also room for expansion with this product. In total you can add up to 20 components onto each system, this is great if you need extra protection or have a large home with lots of entries/exits.
Best for: Large Homes
- 2 Wireless Sirens
- Price is higher than other systems
Somfy have created the ideal system for large homes with the Somfy Premium Smart Home Alarm System.
With a 110 dB indoor alert siren, you can be sure that burglars will be shook if they attempt to breach your precious home.
As a premium product, this system does have a slightly heftier price tag than other Smart Alarm systems but that is expected with a product of this high quality.
The way I look at is: home security is one of the most important aspects and therefore should be of high quality – you get what you pay for when it comes to Smart Home Alarm systems.
Unlike the other systems mentioned in this guide, Somfy Premium also links up with other smart devices like Google Assistant and Nest as well as Alexa. This allows for more variety in terms of connectivity which may better suit the user.
You can install the system yourself, but if you’re not really into DIY, you can pay for someone to come and install Somfy in your home.
3. Veho Cave
Best for: Flats
- Unlimited additions
- Easy to use
- High functionality
- No external siren
Cave by Veho is a comprehensive Smart Alarm system which in my opinion, is ideal for Flats/Apartments.
This reasonably-priced package comes with all the kit you need to get your basic Smart Alarm System up and running.
It’s well made and you can tell that the design is well thought out by small things like the fact that it can be powered by any USB which makes it ideal for small places with not many plug sockets.
There’s one main thing which in my opinion would be a good addition, and that is an external Siren – the current system doesn’t have one, it only supports alerts to your mobile. Some could say that this isn’t necessary, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt to have one.
Best for: Those on a Budget
- App control
- Up to 24 sensors
- No smart device connection (e.g. Alexa)
- Hard to set up
As the cheapest product on this list, the T1 Smart Alarm System is a comprehensive solution to home security on a budget.
It’s nothing special, but it does the job, and provides great value for the price tag.
You can add up to 24 sensors on the device, therefore there is the option to expand should you need to. On the other hand, if you are looking for a system for a large home, we recommend the Somfy Premium.
When I tried to set up the T1 System, I found it more complex than others since the instructions weren’t very clear but I was pleased to find some videos on the internet to help with this.
On the whole, this is a good system for those with more shallow pockets, but in my opinion, I would spend a little bit more to get a better system – it is your home after-all!
Choosing the right Smart Alarm for your Home
The best Smart Alarm for your home depends on a lot of different variables.
There isn’t really a ‘1 size fits all’ when it comes to home security systems.
Here’s a few things you need to take into account when making the decision on which Smart Alarm is best for your situation.
- How big is your house? A larger home will need a more complex system.
- What functionality do you need? Do you just need alerts or do you need a loud external noise?
- Do you have a lot of valuables in your home? No one wants their house to be robbed, but if it did, would you lose a lot? A more reliable system will cost more, but may be worth it if you have a lot to lose.
Who needs a Smart Alarm?
Smart Alarms are recommend to any home owner. They can provide a higher level of security for your property.
On the other hand, you may thing ‘Why do I need a smart one and not just a regular alarm?’.
To answer this question, we first need to look at the benefits of having a smart alarm compared to a regular alarm.
- Monitor on the go
- Arm/disarm easily
- Share information with authorities even if you’re not at home
Smart Alarms are perfect for everyone, but especially those who travel a lot since they can monitor and make changes from anywhere in the world.
Components of a Smart Alarm
A Smart Alarm usually comprises of several different components which make up the system. These components talk to each other and then send signals to your mobile device so that you can monitor what’s going on.
The main components which make up a Smart Alarm are as follows.
- Motion sensors (to detect motion inside or outside the home)
- Contact detectors (doors, windows etc.)
- Base (the main hub which runs the system)
- Speaker (used to raise alarm if an intruder is detected)
These systems are almost always 2 way – meaning that not only the system talks to your device, but also that your device can send instructions to the system for things like Arming/Disarming the alarm.
That’s not it..
Smart Alarms are just one part of Smart Home Security, there are many other things to consider getting, such as the following.
- Smart Home Cameras (see what’s going on 24/7)
- Smart Lighting (make burglars think you’re home, even when you’re not)
- Smart Gates (control which vehicles enter your property)
To conclude; there are a lot of Smart Alarm systems on the market for residentail properties, some more expensive than other and some with better, more advanced functionality.
Our favourite all-rounder which we think suits the majority of homes is the Ring Smart Alarm – it is well trusted, super easy to set up and gives you all the control you need for your burglar-prevention system.
